    All Music Guide Review

Promo Sound's Golden Years of Jazz series is a massive, encyclopedic, and almost exhaustive year-by-year chronological history of jazz from 1917 to 1955, broken down into three eight-disc sets. It's hard to quibble with such an undertaking, and any collection that can move from James P. Johnson through to the Jazz Messengers without missing a single developmental step deserves a tip of the hat. Jazz is such a deep and wide pool, though, that even such a massive collection as this one still feels a bit like a CliffsNotes version of the genre. This second volume covers the years 1940 to 1947. ~ Steve Leggett, All Music Guide
